We procure our name from a show of hands. We have always been and will always be a community endeavor.

We were founded in May 2019 by Frances Story as The Writing Workshop KC — a weekly writing workshop for the Kansas City community.

Hundreds of students joined the workshop in person at Our Daily Nada, and in February 2020, we began experimenting with a new online teaching platform, Zoom, to expand our reach. As fate would have it, class was hosted exclusively online by the end of March and stayed there until 2022, when we cautiously reentered the world, hosting both online and in-person classes, as we continue to do today.

After the production of our first anthology, Out of the Darkness, Into the Light (2021) talks began of launching an indie press and expanding our community.

Salt Tooth Writers and Salt Tooth Press were born.

We were founded with the intent of being an “aggressively vulnerable” space, a “church” for people who don’t have one. (Not in a cult-y or religious way.) More of a it takes a village way. We have a founder and lead teacher but no gods and no masters. Everyone is equally responsible for the homeostasis of the community.

We come from all walks of life. All belief systems. All experiences and backgrounds. Everyone who finds themselves in alignment with our philosophy is welcome. Our teachers are paid. Our Press staff is voluntary. Our collaborative projects are done for the joy of creating. The collective income from WWKC is reinvested back into itself and each year we grow a little braver, expanding what we offer.

Wherever you’re coming from, we're glad you found yourself here, be it for a night or for a lifetime.
